Poster Topic

I already talked to you and Helen about this in more detail, but my topic ideas for my posters are:
-the death penalty
-financial aid for college
-reformation of public school systems

For Friday, I am going to be exploring the death penalty in depth.

Newer Poster Concepts

Education: Funding, I guess, would be better for the audience we are trying to reach. I was thinking possibly funding for higher education. Making financial aid easier to receive and apply for. Also helping pay for tuition, not sure how I would use this for a poster design yet though.

Social Security (One of the stronger ones): Experts say that trust funds will be dried up by 2040 if we don't do something soon about our social security situation. This poster would be a call to action to do something about the situation and stop avoiding it. Our generation wants to be assured that social security isn't for nothing and that we will be able to retire at a reasonable age.

Taxes: Changing the taxing system so that people who make over a certain amount of money have to pay taxes on their incomes too. It really doesn't make sense to be making someone who makes an income UNDER a certain amount pay taxes 100% of the time while others who are better off don't have to.

Posters concepts

racism/racial profiling - I want to confront how racism is still rampant throughout the media and in society but turning the focus on how people are seeing "terrorists." However, I did a poster abou this last year in my elements class, so I don't know that I would have enough of a fresh mind set to think of something that is drastically different from that previous poster.

gay rights/anti-gay rights - I can't decide which would be more fun to do. My idea is based on how all of those "God hates fags!" posters are always drawn in marker on posterboard, but what if they were mass marketed as high-quality posters?

apathy - Not sure how I would go about this one, but I think it would be funny to promote apathy towards issues/an issue in a reverse-psychology sort of way. I'd have to narrow down the issue(s) that I would focus on and then figure out how I would go about it.

Other Posters

Shannon Hart-Read

I like the cut paper look. I also like that some of the text looks hand written and some doesn't. the colors are bright and fun. It's just a friendly poster.

Jason Munn

The neutral colors work well with the stamp idea. I like that one stamp is out of place. the typeface fits well, too. It's a nice, simple poster.

Clifford Stoltze

The two shades of blue are lovely on the complimentary orange background. All of the little images fit perfectly up against each other. Then, there's the white line that crawls in between them. It leads my eye from "Discover" to the smaller information at the bottom. The different styles of letters look like they belong together.

Political Poster Examples

I didn't bring any images of posters to class, so here are my picks:

Luba Lukova

This poster has a simple composition and color scheme. The small war objects make up the bigger peace object. It's a good design from a distance and has a deeper meaning up close.

Karen Kurycki

This is one of a series of posters. There is one with a hand and one with a brain, as well. The bright colors in the center of the white background caught my attention, which is important for a poster. The message is simple and I like that the image completes the sentence.

Colin White

The bright colors got me again. This poster is violent because of the red slash that I see as blood. I like the way the text is stacked and fit together. The back and forth of the words (both in the way that they are placed on each side of the red line and in the opposing meanings) is easy to interact with and has a strong message.

Poster Ideas

1. Language Policy
2. Death Penalty
3. Energy & Oil

poster idea

abortion
poverty
healthcare

Poster topics

Gun Control-about gun violence awareness
War-promoting peace
Capitalism-identifying nations over consumption

Sorry for being late.

PS I went and saw the Banksy Pet Store Exhibit in NY yesterday, it was really cool, thanks for the suggestion!:)

3. The Death Penalty

I like working with the subject of education a lot more than the death penalty idea.

Kristen's Poster Ideas

Education- Possibly "No Child Left Behind" or more funding for schools

Social Security and Health care- For our generation

Taxing- Obama's role in taxation

Kallie's Poster Topics

1.Youth Rights and Age Discrimination: This concept would bring forth an urgency in our youth and also bring a respect to the participation they have in our society.  I believe if voting encompasses a large portion of 18-24 year olds, that they should also be provided the opportunity to execute their rights beyond the voting polls every four years too.  Perhaps this would be a call to action for a new New Deal proposal like the American Youth Congress, or National Youth Administration.  Active groups like these are desperately needed, but are not available.  Many students and youth are mature  young adults, but have no where to go to participate without being looked down upon, or not taken seriously.
2. Stereotypes/Prejudices: False assumptions about entire groups of people.  I do not want to hone in on one specific group of people (ie the conventional blacks or hispanics).  What I am more interested in addressing is the entire system of judgements and prejudices.  I feel like so many false projections are placed on individuals by where they came from, what they look like, by different ethnic groups, social classes, religious orders, gender, sexual orientation.....  This is a pretty broad topic to cover, I know, but I want to address the whole topic of stereotyping and how it negatively affects the decisions that we make.
3.Corrupt Business/Trade:  This could be directed towards oil companies, of course, but I think that everybody knows that already.  Political action is about informing the people with facts first, and then presenting them with ways to solve the problem.  A poster I would make for this would inform people about the companies they are consumers for, but then I would inform them about all the negative strings that are attached to that.  (Example: Say a stuffed animal company produces their product out of child labor (ironically) and creates their packaging from destroyed rainforest trees.  This example is a little extreme, but you get the picture)  Uncensoring business's actions is first, and then people can make their own informative decisions about what they buy and what they are, in turn, supporting.  This poster would go beyond voting too (although voting is part of it); it would bring forth a calling to our participation in our industrial world.

OK
Sorry about the length.  I got a little carried away, I know.

Good Website

P.s. This is a good website discussing current issues

Poster topics

Financial Aid for Students
In 2007, the Democratic Senate voted to increase college financial aid by cutting $20 billion in subsidies to banks and giving it to the poorest college students. (this issue also includes middle class)

Universal Health Care
Universal health care guarantees coverage for all citizens and is mandated, funded or facilitated by the government. Every affluent country in the world enjoys universal health coverage except the U.S. which spends twice as much per capita on health care.

Environmental Issues
Emissions Trading
Emissions trading (or cap and trade), puts a limit on the amount firms can pollute and issue an equivalent number of credits. Firms that pollute beyond their allowance buy credits from those that pollute less.
Energy Independence
A popular campaign that promises to reduce oil imports for security purposes and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Legislation in 2005 and 2007 have attempted, although poorly, to address American dependency.
Fuel Efficiency Regulation
The large automotive industry has prevented any effective change from occurring in fuel efficiency standards since 1975 until the Senate passed a bill in June of 2007 that would require a 10 mpg increase in efficiency by car manufacturers.

Poster ideas

- Warrantless Wiretapping
Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, President Bush, in a highly contested move, executively ordered the NSA to wiretap communications between U.S. citizens and suspected terrorists without warrants, and in some cases without any probable cause. This directly affects our freedom of speech, and turns the government on its on country.

- Gun Control
The debate over gun ownership continues in the 2008 presidential campaign. It's centered on the Second Amendment to the Constitution, protecting a person's right to bear and keep arms.

-The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
An international treaty opened for signature in 1968 and currently signed by 189 nations to stop the production of nuclear weapons, disarm current weapons and peacefully use nuclear technology.
Opponents to the NNPT view it as a threat to the so-called 'Nuclear Deterrence'; that is, the school of thought that views the destructive capability of nuclear weapons as their central mechanism for resistance of their very use. Proponents view this treaty as a step towards a nuclear free world.

poster concepts

I am most invested in the idea of persuading Maryland voters to vote against the institution of slot machines in Maryland.

other possible ideas that I could work with are:

-going green, and helping to preserve the environment

-working on making birth control more accessible, especially  to people without health insurance.

Poster Topics

education - more grants, less loans

election reform - it's not the voter who counts, it's who counts the votes

tax reform - how fast can you spend your stimulus check?

war on terror - killing yourself to live, join the army to pay for college

Jenna's Topics

1. The problem of the growing cost of social security/health care for the aging baby boomer generation. I think it would appeal to to the younger generations to tell them they can help come up with a different solution.
2. The future of health care for people our age, as it applies to something like birth control or ADD medicine, which are a pretty universal prescription types of medication.
3. The growing cost of education, and what it means for us, and maybe what it will mean for future generations.

With my 3 ideas, I want to focus on our generation having its own authority, and using the idea of rejecting the ideas of our elders as a way to look toward our own future. Though that idea of not wanting to listen to adults is sort of immature, I feel like a lot of people see not voting as a way to rebel, when really it is just continuing to submit to the older generations' ideas/policies.

Nat's Poster topics

financial equality for women
environment, go green, protecting national parks
foreign oil dependency

Friday, October 24th: Project 3

Make sure you have researched protest/political/propaganda posters, as well as picked three issues that you think would make a strong poster for this election. These should be worthy of a campaign, and could be environmental (wheat paste a la Shepard Fairey), stencil, and so forth. Consider your audience (18-24 year olds), and that this MUST be a call to action. You are trying to prompt your audience to vote.

Think about Voice and Audience, as well as delivery method. This will be part of a system.

To reiterate:

For class on Friday:
1. Writing #2: James Victore
2. Poster research: Three posters on one pdf page. Be prepared to discuss WHY you chose them, and WHO designed them.
3. Political poster research: In addition to your general poster research, please find THREE political posters that you think are well-designed. These should be interesting and worthy of discussion. Please put all three of these on a single page pdf as well, for a total of 2 pdf pages per student.
4. Project research: Select a minimum of 3-5 issues that you think could be a strong direction to pursue for your poster assignment. For example, James Victore created an anti-racism poster that is very strong, but also shocking to many audiences.

Our visiting artist for the project, Helen Armstrong, will be joining us in class, and we will use the entire class period for lecture and a work session for you.

Writing Assignment #2

Your second essay is due Friday, October 24th.
Subject: James Victore

These essays are to be 1-page in length.

These are OPINION essays, and I want you to respond to what you discover about these communicators. No slang, be careful of grammatical structure and spelling. Respond honestly, and make it interesting for me to read.

For each paper, I would like you to consider and answer the following questions:

1. For what area(s) of design is this individual well-known?
2. Were you familiar with this individual or their work before this assignment?
3. What is this individual’s philosophy or approach to design?
4. What do you find particularly interesting about this individual or their work?
5. Please include an image of this individual’s work that you particularly enjoy.
This should be well-reproduced, with good resolution and color. Why did you choose this piece? Please attach this page as a second page.

You may use the internet for research, but I would strongly suggest looking for books and magazine articles as well. YOU MAY NOT COPY AND PASTE FROM THE INTERNET. This is plagiarism, and I will be checking. Plagiarism will be an automatic F for the course. Your thoughts and opinions only, please.

Revisions

Hi, so here are my revisions for cut. and I have two for broken, broken_1 and broken_2. and yes, that's me this time. haha. The other picture was cropped on both sides, so I couldn't do much with it. Also, the green box for both broken magazines would be flush with the edge. Any suggestions before I print?
